Armenia at the crossroads, Georgia on hold

2009-04-24 15:24

5/1/0/2510.jpegArmenian President Serge Sargsyan is on a visit to Moscow now. There are plenty of issues to discuss with his Russian colleague. Notwithstanding Russia's negative reaction to the NATO exercises in Georgia in May Armenian militaries are still going to Tbilisi. Besides Erevan has settled relations with Turkey only to such an extent as not to allow Barack Obama's Armenian genocide recognition tomorrow, to make Russia think about decreasing its influence in the Caucasus, and to make Georgia regret the loss of a transit country status.

The visit of Armenian President Serge Sargsyan to Moscow was planned long ago. The main subject of negotiations must be the methods of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution that burst out between Armenians and Azerbaijanis in 1988. The attempts to settle it have been made by the OSCE Minsk group chaired by Russia, the USA and France with little success. Neither an armed suppression of separatists nor recognition of this territory's independence have been proposed. In recent months Moscow has been actively involved in the peacekeeping process pressing for the meeting between the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders at a trilateral summit in Saint-Petersburg.

But according to the experts Sarkisyan and his colleague Dmitry Medvedev will primarily discuss Armenia's participation in the coming NATO exercises in Georgia in May. Journalist Alexey Venediktov is sure that Sagsyan will be advised against his intention, reports. Playing along with NATO and Georgia in the matter affecting Russian interests Armenia is seriously damaging partner relations with Russia. This was the point of view of Alexey Vlasov, the General Director of Center of Post-Soviet Studies, deputy dean of History Faculty of the Moscow State University expressed in Novosti international press center on April 22. "No doubt this move does not contribute to development of Armenia's positive image as Russia's main strategic ally and a partner in South Caucasus whatever justifications there might be", - he said. "The game of multiple directions our partners in South Caucasus and in Central Asia are playing now might diminish the trust not only between the two countries' political elites but between the international layers of society that always sympathize with the Armenian nation and state", - the expert warned.
