Abkhazia in the face of a new wave of provocations2009-05-15 17:16
Georgian special services are trying to boost subversive activities in Abkhazia, the competent authorities of the republic conclude. On May 13 an explosion was reported. A car with Siemens employees on the repair works at the Inguri hydroelectric plant exploded on a grenade in Gali district.
A UAZ vehicle was carrying twelve company employees, all of them local residents, back home to the village of energy workers in Chegal, - Gali district police chief Lawrence Kogonia told Vesti. - As a result of the explosion the passengers and the driver were slightly injured and taken to the local hospital". Kogonia also stated that the incident had taken place at the exit of the tunnel leading to the Inguri plant machine room and the line with an RGD-5 grenade was stretched across the road. "This incident is aimed at discrediting power structures and local authorities; - Lawrence Kogonia is quoted by RIA Novosti. - The explosion was organized to prove inability of Abkhaz authorities to provide working conditions for foreign specialists at the plant".
Sergey Bagapsh too believes it was a provocation stating that the Georgian special services are trying to intimidate those who work with Abkhazia's legitimate authorities, - Interfax reports. Now an investigating group is operating at the explosion scene intending to find out how the criminals managed to penetrate the guarded territory of the Inguri hydroelectric plant.
In the meantime in Upper Kodory Valley Abkhaz power officers discovered a fresh arms storage, - Rosbalt reports. According to the republic's Deputy Defense Minister Garry Kupalba over the fortnight the power structures of Abkhazia and the Russian Federal Security Service border department have been carrying out a special operation in Kodory Valley and have found a hideout in Omarishara locality. Kupalba also reported about 100 kg of TNT, 52 anti-tank mines, mattresses and other outfit found in the hideout. "According to the operational information we have the Georgian special services planned to carry out a number of operations against Abkhaz servicemen, Russian border guards and Kodory Valley residents that cooperate with the Abkhaz authorities in Upper Kodory Valley", - Kupalba summed up.
The words of Sukhum representatives lead to the only conclusion: the explosion in Gali district and the storage in Kodory Valley are organized by the Georgian special services. There is no 100% certainty about it, but it would be wrong to deny this possibility.
The thing is that since the treaty on joint control of Georgian-Abkhazian border with Russia was signed there has been more order on the new republican borders. News agencies have stopped reporting on regular incidents.
