Russian-Abkhazian private matters2009-05-18 12:12
On May 14 President of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh had a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Sochi. Moscow's plan to grant an economic development loan to Sukhum in the near future was declared.
"These are not big amounts - around a billion, a billion and a half rubles - RIA Novosti quotes Sergey Bagapsh. - The money will go to two directions. First is development of banking sphere: capitalization of the national bank and small and medium business support. The second is development of railway system. I believe Vladimir Vladimirovich favors these initiatives and in the near future they will be implemented". Bagapsh also stated the loan in question is reimbursable and is not part of Russian non-repayable aid to Abkhazia program.
As for RUR 2.36 bln Moscow donated earlier for the new republic's recovery Bagapsh emphasized: "Now our primary task is to fulfill economic plans and we have such opportunities, - ITAR-TASS quotes. - Believe me Russian aid to Abkhazia will be targeted. We will do our best for social and economic growth".
Vladimir Putin highlighted that after Russia's recognition of Abkhazia's independence there are new additional possibilities to organize activities "in all directions including social and economic development of the republic, support and relevant assistance". According to the Russian Prime Minister the support will depend on the plans stipulated by the republican government.
Sukhum has a heap of plans. This is offshore exploration, resort business development, construction of railways and motorways. According to Sergey Bagapsh Abkhazia intends to implement many projects in mutually beneficial cooperation with Russia. The most significant one is the new republic's participation in preparations for Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi. Now the republic is ready to provide all necessary assistance to Russia. "We have several ports and a good material of high quality - crushed stone - indispensible on construction sites", - Bagapsh stated.
Developing economy Sukhum does not abandon another crucial issue - security. Last week Russia's UN Envoy Vitaly Churkin officially stated he had information on concentration of the Georgian armed forces on the Georgian-Abkhazian border. In particular, the Russian diplomat called attention to GRAD rocket-launchers, trench mortars and two thousand Georgian special forces servicemen. The president of Abkhazia confirmed this information.
