Ban Ki-moon to reanimate Geneva2009-05-20 23:56
All participants of the fifth round of Geneva talks on the situation in South Caucasus including the delegation from Abkhazia sat at the negotiating table on May 19 as stated by Alexander Pisarev, Senior Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of Russian Federation to the UN.
"I fully confirm resumption of discussions, - RIA Novosti quotes. - As stated by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin yesterday we stopped the clock and waited for the issue of the UN Secretary General's report. Last night the report was released. It contained the phrasing suitable for the Abkhazian side and the discussions were continued at 9 a.m according to the pre-coordinated format".
Swiss talks should have begun on May 18 but without representatives from Abkhazia. Before that the Abkhazian Foreign Minister Sergey Shamba emphasized that Sukhum's participation in the talks was possible if Ban Ki-moon's report contained exact phrases. The report was supposed to be issued on May 15 but the term was postponed for 3 days.
The Russian side understood the position of the Abkhazian colleagues. Moscow suggested making a break in the talks until the UN Secretary General's report issue was solved. "With one side absent at the session it would be wrong to discuss serious security issues, - Grigory Karasin, Deputy Foreign Minister remarked, RIA Novosti reports. - We hope the content and the phrasing of Ban Ki-moon's report will help the Abkhazian side to return to the negotiating table. As long as Georgia keeps insisting on restoration of its virtual integrity in a political or military way there will be no result".
According to ITAR-TASS Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov highlighted that in the current situation the international organizations are the first to blame for they didn't provide initial conditions to ensure timely work at the negotiating round in Geneva.
South Ossetia was solidary with their Abkhazian counterparts. They refused to take part in the talks until the delegation from Sukhum arrived. "Today we came forward with a statement refusing to participate in this round as it's senseless to discuss security issues in South Ossetia and Abkhazia without the Abkhazian delegation", - Boris Chochiev, RSO President's Plenipotentiary for post- conflict settlement told RIA Novosti. - However we reserve the right to get back to the discussions if Abkhazia manages to settle this disputable issue with the UN. If until tomorrow the issue is not settled we'll leave".
It was Sukhum to take the floor then.
