Sukhum to greet guests2009-05-21 20:05
Greeting foreign guests is becoming a habit in the Abkhazian capital. In the coming days Sukhum receives Michael Davenport, Director of Russia, South Caucasus and Central Asia Department with the Foreign Ministry of Great Britain. Boris Gryzlov, Chairman of Russian parliament has just ended his visit to Abkhazia. The arrival of such a high-ranking Russian official to Sukhum was the first after Russia's recognition of the republic's independence last year.
"No doubt Russia provides considerable assistance for Abkhazia's economic recovery; - Boris Gryzlov is quoted by Rosbalt. - It's direct help in solving social issues, I mean all kinds of welfare payments including pensions, and the main thing is not the money paid but fruitful cooperation in constructing new facilities for Olympics 2014 in Sochi". According to Boris Gryzlov Abkhazia is the state that can lend real support to Russia in preparations for the international sports event. "First of all these are inert materials for construction. The amount to be imported exceeds 100 million tons. These are huge volumes. Abkhazia's participation in these projects will be a stimulus for the development of industries and transport routes as we are going to import all
that by railway and sea crafts". - Kommersant quotes the Chairman of Russian parliament.
As RIA Novosti reports during his visit Boris Gryzlov met with president of the republic Sergey Bagapsh and deputies of the people's assembly of the Abkhaz parliament. The Russian politician informed his Abkhazian colleagues that the State Duma of the Russian Federation would come up with the initiatives stipulating economic cooperation between Russia and Abkhazia. According to him 26 agreements on development of transport infrastructure, ports, construction of industrial and social facilities, travel industry are under elaboration within the framework of interstate cooperation.
Boris Gryzlov laid special emphasis on the recreational sphere. According to his evaluations in 2009 not less than a million Russian citizens will come there for vacation. These are figures referring to 2007. Last year's figures are smaller because of Georgia's aggression in South Ossetia that brought tension to the whole region. This is the way life in the republic gradually becomes normal. As Gryzlov noted solving the problems "that life offers" together had become possible after Russia's recognition of Abkhazia's and South Ossetia's independence.
An important step toward stabilization of the situation in the Caucasus is signing the Treaty on friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with the new republics.
