NATO’s military exercises in Georgia: part two

2009-05-22 14:27

2800.jpegNATO has started the Cooperative Lancer 09 field exercises in Georgia. In addition, the military department of the republic and the Alliance are jointly developing a new security and military strategy framework for Georgia, where, according to military commanders, Russia is considered to be the basic external threat.

About a thousand servicemen are going to participate in the field exercises at the Vaziani training field. Cooperative Lancer 09 implies the basic peace-support operation training at the battalion level that is aimed at honing coordinated actions of the military servicemen from the North-Atlantic bloc member-countries and partners, ITAR-TASS reports. According to NATO representatives, no heavy equipment will be used in these exercises, which are going to last until June, 3.

The first serial of the Cooperative Longbow 09 exercises that terminated on May, 18 implied studying staff skills, NATO procedures and the crisis situation management compatibility at the brigade level, RIA Novosti informs. About 200 servicemen took part in the first serial of exercises.

Simultaneously with the beginning of the exercises at the battalion level, the Georgian Ministry of Defense together with his NATO colleagues is actively working upon the new military strategy of the country. According to head of the Georgian military department David Sikharulidze, the new strategy will be mainly focused on enhancing Georgia's defense capacity and unlike in the previous document more attention will be paid to the future threats from Russia, IA Trend reports. "The priorities will include the management and control systems, as well as enhancing the role of defensive operations in the military forces preparation system. We are also working on the issue of reserve forces, which will require the development of a separate framework", - Sikharulidze pointed out. The necessity of reviewing the security and military strategy framework became evident to the official Tbilisi right "after the war with Russia". This opinion was shared to Rosbalt by State Minister of Georgia for European and Atlantic integration Georgi Baramidze. Well, this is not at all surprising. It was Baramidze who blamed Moscow for being engaged in the Mukhrovani mutiny notwithstanding the fact that Mikhail Saakashvili himself on second thoughts duly withdrew his accusations addressed to Russia.

However, it turned out that even the irrepressible Baramidze was outdone by State Minister for Reintegration Temur Yakobashvili who has specified the contents of the new military framework of Georgia. "In terms of threatening, the priority was given to Russia that has already switched to open aggression", - Yakobashvili stated plainly.
