Sergey Bagapsh: let’s respect our victory2009-05-26 13:15
Even if Mikheil Saakashvili steps aside and pro-Russian politicians replace him Russia will not revoke its recognition of Abkhazia's independence as stated by president Sergey Bagapsh on May 25.
"Now we are recognized by Russia, there will be no rollback", - Kommersant newspaper quotes. - The fact that Russian companies start operating here is our need, not Russia's. We need new employments, salaries, taxes, rehabilitation of collapsed production sector we can't do on our own, development of resort infrastructure. Direct investments are the way for our country to come back to life".
According to the Abkhaz leader for the first time over a long period the new republic has an opportunity to get down to internal issues. That doesn't mean the authorities must calm down. On the contrary, the president is convinced, we must work without cease. "Yes, now we are at a transient stage. We have abandoned the former system without achieving the level of interstate relations with Russia and other countries, - Sergey Bagapsh says. - Economic recovery has never been quick for any state of the world. And we do appreciate Russia's help today. We are slowly building up the model of self-sufficiency. It takes time to build an economy. We need a serious program we are working on".
Abkhaz president is sure that Georgia's Western partners supporting territorial ambitions of Saakashvili's aggressive regime prevent the republic from acquiring necessary experience in foreign policy. But Sukhum is meeting troubles halfway. "We need time to be recognized by the rest of the world, - Bagapsh believes. - For now our relations with Europe are complicated, we are not recognized, visas are not issued to us, these are implicit sanctions against us. All depends on how we'll shape our interior and foreign policies, our economy, our civil society. Finally the world community will say: yes, these people are worthy of being a subject of international law".
Even now Abkhazia has a lot to be proud of. As stated by Beslan Kubrava, the republic's Finance minister, since 2004 due to the efforts of the government pensions to different categories of citizens have been significantly increased. According to Kubrava, in 2004 the pension to orphans was 160 rubles, and now this figure has grown 10-fold. 1st group invalids of the Great Patriotic War have 1.5 rubles instead of 280 rubles and pensioners having the "Hero of Abkhazia" status receive 3 thousand rubles over 210 rubles before. "Today the government pays pensions that have not been paid since 2004", - the Finance Minister remarked.
