Business consolidation and the politicians2009-06-08 14:26
Business consolidation and the Georgian politicians seem to be unable to come to terms, and it is not only the oppositely-minded officials who cannot find any common ground. The on-going dispute is undermining both the United National Movement ruling team and the ranks of non-parliament opposition, which is also far from solidarity. It is the businessmen who show unexampled unity against the backdrop of crisis.
Today, the auction sale of the disgraced businessman Kibar Khalvashi's property failed again. According to Commersant radio station, his attorney Dmitri Gabunia has stated the following: "The auction failed because of no bids. Neither of businessmen broke the business ethics by expressing his wish to purchase the property that might soon become disputed, - the attorney pointed out. This is an unexampled case of the Georgian business community resisting unlawfulness".
By the way, the auction sale of Khalvashi's property has failed for the second time. The reason is neither the crisis, nor the absence of money: the Georgian businessmen are showing solidarity with their colleague. Kibar Khalvashi left Georgian on political grounds, and his property was distrained at the direction of the Board of administrative cases of the city court of Tbilisi as of 1 April 2009. Ministry of Finance of Georgia allowed the Large Taxpayers Inspectorate to offer Kibar Khalvashi's companies, Priza and Art, for sale. It is also planned to sell the property of another of his companies, International Building Company, by public auction.
Kibar Khalvashi's attorneys are going to appeal against the authorities' decision to auction the businessman's property. Hearing of a case is going to take place in Strasbourg on June, 22. However, the authorities have shown impatience and quickly put up the expropriated property for sale.
The opposition came out in support of Khalvashi, who in January received the status of a political emigrant in Germany. On June, 4, the day before the auction, a meeting was held in front of the Tax Administration Service building in the Isanski region of Tbilisi. Leader of United Georgia Movement Eka Beselia stated that the opposition will always resist the illegal actions like this.
On the whole, it is not at all difficult to justify the position of the United Georgia Movement. The party is headed by former Minister of Defense Irakli Okruashvili, and Kibar Khalvashi is his close friend and associate. The opposition is from time to time frightening the country leaders with Okruashivili's return back to motherland. In the opinion of many experts, Okruashvili's presence might change the nature of the protest actions.
