Right after the Georgian police managed to seek out the author of the railway explosion that happened not far from Zugdidi on June, 2, the explosive device was planted there again. This time, there were two explosions at Zugdidi railway station followed by a third one in the town outskirts. No serious damage was caused. One man was injured. It was 11.30 p.m. Shalva Okromchedlishvili was walking along the freight train when suddenly there was an explosion. The top of a rail car was torn off. The electrician, an elderly man of fifty-eight, was wounded, the injury being nonfatal. He was carried to hospital. The panes of the railway station building and the near houses were broken. All the staff was evacuated from the railway station premises and the criminal experts and bomb technicians were called for.
In an hour, there was another explosion. The explosive device was found in the garbage can. Around 02.00 a.m., there was the third explosion in the MAZ truck located in the town outskirts. The scene was visited by the staff of the Chief Local Administration of the Samegrelo-Upper Svanetia region. The police in Zugdidi were confined to barracks; the town area being patrolled.
According to preliminary data, explosive devices stuffed with TNT and plastid went off. Small damage was caused to the railway track at the location of the first explosion. The Zugdidi-Tbilisi rail run was cancelled, the passengers having been transported to Tbilisi by minibuses.
Head of the Railway Department of Georgia Irakli Ezugbaya has already calmed down the media: nothing suspicious was found after checking the railway station and its premises. "The criminal experts have checked the area once again and we may guarantee the safety of further rail runs, which is the main point in this case", - Ezugbaya stated.
The movement of trains in Zugdidi has been resumed. This was reported to the journalists by Head of the Western Georgia Administration of Railway Department Zurab Gogokhia. According to him, the restoration work and field engineering at Zugdidi railway lasted throughout the night. "The dog specialists have already finished their work, and the Tbilisi-Zugdidi high-speed train started off with a little delay", - he pointed out.
Governor of the Samegrulo-Upper Svanetia region Zaza Gorozia refrained from any comments on the accident. "The investigation is on, and the relevant agencies will deliver their assessment of the situation", - Gorozia stated to GHN.
