EU Strengthens Hand in the Caucasus

2009-06-18 22:52

3095.jpegRussia is ready to co-operate with the European Union to provide for peace and stability in the South Caucasus. The Russian external policy body informed of this on 17 June in its official communication. In Smolenskaya Square they think that after the withdrawal of the UN and OSCE the presence of EU mission observers is required.

«In spite of certain questions to the EU monitoring mission in Georgia, in particular, regarding its potential efficiency in the case of new aggressive steps of Georgia, the presence of EU observers in the Georgian territories bordering on Abkhazia and South Ossetia is a weighty constraint, - runs the text of the RIA Novosti official communication. - We are ready to continue and reinforce our interaction with the European Union in this area, including joint activity within incident prevention mechanisms ».

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stressed that the entire responsibility for the withdrawal of the UN mission whose long-term activity generally enjoyed positive comments of Moscow, is incumbent on «those Western countries who have demonstrated kind of ideologized obstinacy for many months». «They seem not to need UN observers who would impede any force attempts of the Tbilisi authorities, - runs the communication. - The desire to stress the existence of Georgia within its previous borders that existed before August'2008 and to cancel Abkhazia from the political map of Transcaucasia, to come back to the unsettled state of the conflict which has actually been solved, in the draft resolution of the UN Security Council turned out to be much more important ».

In fact, with the beginning of the defense of the Georgian-Abkhazian and Georgian-South Ossetian borders shared with Russia the young republics have finally breathed a sigh of relief. Sukhumi and Tskhinvali pay more and more attention to the development of their economics and resolution of social problems. While Tbilisi, in the opinion of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is trying to «switch the focus on external enemies, on the problem of its territorial integrity and get away from the resolution of the vital social and economic issues».In its statement the Russian external policy body stresses: «The winding-up of the UN and OSCE missions proves the true intentions of Georgia and its sponsors with regard to security, stability, restoration of confidence and good neighbourly relations between the states of the region». This conclusion is categorical but quite well-grounded.

It is also worth noting that in Georgia itself they say that the responsibility for the withdrawal of the international missions is incumbent on the Georgian authorities, reports Rosbalt.
