Georgia to watch Russia exercise2009-06-30 09:00
Caucasus 2009 operational and strategic drills have begun in the south of Russia. The military maneuvers are held in compliance with the Russian Armed Forces training plan as stated by Andrey Bobrun, head of information and public relations department of the North Caucasus Military District on June 29.
According to preliminary information over 8 thousand militaries, 200 tanks, 450 armored vehicles and 250 artillery pieces will take part in Caucasus 2009 exercises that will continue through July 6 on the territory of Krasnodar and Stavropol territories, Astrakhan, Volgograd and Rostov regions, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Dagestan, Karachaevo-Cherkessia and Chechnya. As Andrey Bobrun says the air and air defense forces, the Caspian fleet and Novorossiysk naval base, regional border control department of the Federal Security Service of Russia and air-landing troops will be involved too.
The drills will have two stages. During the first stage the military units will practice operational readiness of their forces and equipment for fulfillment of tasks and subsequent advance and occupation of initial districts. During the second stage the united group of troops will hold a special anti-terrorist operation aimed at liquidation of leaders and members of terrorist organizations, their bases and training centers. A number of activities for protection of important state facilities will be executed too, ITAR TASS reports.
According to Andrey Bobrun a wide range of possible adequate security measures for Russian citizens, key transport and energy communications, strategic facilities as well as for protection of Russia's economic interests will be tried and analyzed. "During the exercises the troops of North Caucasus Military District will act within the organization and staff structure in compliance with the new system of Russian Armed Forces", - the head of the information department noted. - These drills are aimed at evaluation of the real state of combat and mobilization readiness of the troops deployed in the South Western region of Russia".
It is already known the militaries of the 4th and 7th Russian military bases stationed in South Ossetia and Abkhazia and the officers of the republics' interior armies will take part in the drills. Recently Sergey Shamba, Abkhaz Foreign Minister reported: "We have a cooperation treaty with Russia stipulating joint resolution of security issues, - RIA Novosti quotes. - Thus we will keep organizing joint activities reinforcing security in the region. We are interested to have better security conditions here".
