The Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has recently taken a great liking to Lithuania. Especially to its President Valdas Adamkus who is currently leaving his post. During his recent visit to Georgia the Lithuanian President was honoured with the most important Georgian award: the Order of Vakhtang Gorgasali. And now Mikhail Nikolaevich has decided to take part in the celebrations of the 1000th anniversary of the Lithuanian nationhood.
After all, how can one miss such an event, lose the opportunity to announce once again to the whole world that «the little democratic Georgia», as well as «the little democratic Lithuania», are fearlessly resisting the insidious schemes of «that huge aggressive totalitarian Russia». And which place could be better for such revelations if not Vilnus?
Not long ago it hosted a session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, where the Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus attacked Russia again for «occupying» Georgia. According to the President, international organizations cannot shut their eyes to the fact that Russia does not respect the territorial integrity of Georgia and unilaterally blocks international observer missions in South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
According to Adamkus, it is impossible to return to an order dividing the world into spheres of influence. In particular, the Lithuanian President reminded again about the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact including some secret protocols on dividing the spheres of influence in Eastern Europe between Germany and the USSR. «We cannot accept "new realities forced down the throat". We cannot leave to fate the destinies of thousands of people living in the conflict zones in the South Caucasus, in Moldavia or in South Eastern Europe. Our common responsibility lies in creating trust, resolving any controversy and ensuring security, territorial integrity and sovereignty of states», - the Lithuanian holder of the Georgian Order of Vakhtang Gorgasali breathed fire and fury at Moscow.
Explaining why it is Lithuania to raises these burning issues, while OSCE representatives are disposed to softer tones, Adamkus stressed that it is not Lithuania but OSCE whose representatives have been «thrown out» of the territory to be observed that must be tough. The Lithuanian President does not understand why their tone is «softer» than that of Vilnus.
Such passionate incomprehension of Mikhail Nikolaevich's Lithuanian friend made the Chairman of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, a Portuguese Parliament member Joao Soares, express his opinion on the events of last August.
