Three Months of Protests and a Battling Draw2009-07-09 23:05
Today the Georgian opposition whose activity is tailing at the break of summer is promising to take 10 000 people to the meeting. Regional manifestants will also come to the hard-boiled Prospekt Rustaveli. In this way the opposition will celebrate another small anniversary: three months from the beginning of the protest activities. After three months of political confrontation the web of the «palace intrigues has got even more tangled. Accusations, compromising evidence, interception: all means are used for the sake of a victory, and they say that all is fair in war. At the same time the opposition has already declared that another round of confrontation will come this autumn.
The authorities are trying to maximally weaken the opposition to make protests come to naught bby autumn. Their opponents are assuring that the authorities can take any measures, but they will not manage to knock down the protest wave. In short, everything is as ever. And the scenario of the current «jubilee event» is also painfully familiar. Thus, one of the young opposition activists Jaba Jishkariani said that roadblocks will be set up and a street procession will be organized. In this manner Saakashvili's opponents decided to demonstrate the «people's protest against the lawlessness of the current government».
Jishkariani urged everybody to join this event. In his words, the reduction of the protest scale is inadmissible, as it will untie the authorities' hands, and they will intensify their persecution and will arrest all the opposition activists. The protest charge reduction is not just the publicity of the authorities who are waging a relentless struggle against the oppositionists. The confrontation failure has somewhat damped down somebody's enthusiasm. And most citizens of the country are more worried about vital problems of surviving during the crisis than about the power ambitions of some opposition politicians.
The other day the ex Georgian Premier, now leader of the «Movement for Fair Georgia» party Zurab Nogaideli declared that his adherents are suspending their participation in the civil disobedience campaign till autumn. This declaration has caused some hot arguments among the oppositionists. «Of course, we do not find comfort in the illusion that in July and August we will manage to keep the same protest degree as some months ago, - admitted Eka Besselia, leader of the «Movement for United Georgia» party, according to «Kommersant». - However, our party will do its best to preserve the centre of protest on Prospekt Rustaveli».
