Missing the storm

2009-07-10 17:21

3328.jpegThese days, the Georgian opposition expressed its concert about the disappearance of the president. However, Mikhail Nikolaevitch has not been on air for only 24 hours. With his fiery speech delivered at the Security Council meeting, Saakashvili obviously decided either not to distress his opponents, or to bear some ill will against Russia, which, in his interpretation, is to blame for all the misfortunes of Georgia, or else, to make a declaration of love and loyalty to the United States. This time, he assured that there will be no war.

On the eve of the three-month anniversary of the opposition's confrontation with the authorities, the radicals displayed touching concern about the president's fate, whose resignation they are demanding. During the oppositional meeting in front of the parliament, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, leader of the Way of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili expressed her concern as to the absence of the head of state on the air of the Georgian TV channels within the last 24 hours, having pointed at the president's disappearance.

"Mikhail Saakashvili made a brief statement from Vilnius in the morning of July, 7 in respect of the meeting of Dmitri Medvedev and Barack Obama; after that, his visit was never commented upon. Either he has got nothing to say, or he is hiding", - the New Region is quoting Zurabishvili. Next day, the oppositionists promised to celebrate the three-month anniversary of the confrontation with a large meeting. However, the number of protesters that gathered in the square turned out to be much less than the expected one hundred thousand. The action was held without any incidents.

On the same day, at the Security Council meeting, Mikhail Nikolaevitch again spoke about Russia's "evil plans". According to Saakashvili, Russia has got two plans in place in respect of Georgia: one of them implied supporting the domestic infighting, while the other one was aimed at "political trade" at the international arena. The president directly pointed at the fact that the Georgian opposition is supposedly sponsored from the North: Russia "has been making active attempts to encourage domestic infighting in Georgia and the cash flow from Russia is needed to sponsor various political forces".

The topic is not at all a new one. Within the three months of confrontation, the authorities' accusations addressed at the opposition hardly ever changed. Before the protest actions, Saakashvili and the authorities personally accused the opposition of living on either the Kremlin's money, or that of the Georgian businessmen who have made a fortune in the Northern lands, or that of the thieves in law residing in Moscow. This topic has been recently developed in a sharper form.
