The Stout US Naval Forces guided-missile destroyer that has recently entered the port of Batumi was received by the Georgian authorities with the utmost enthusiasm. The American warship's friendly visit is as precious to Mikhail Saakahsvili as an umbrella on a rainy day.
It has not been 24 hours since Dmitri Medvedev's short visit to Tskhinval that one could already state: the US have not just criticized the step taken by the Russian leader but have already demonstrated their solidarity with Georgia by sending their water craft to the exercises held jointly with the Georgian coast guard motorboats in the water area of Batumi and Poti.
According to the Georgian coast guard service, "the Stout destroyer will hold theoretical and practical training sessions together with two Georgian water crafts, which are aimed at practicing the sinking prevention and fire localization mechanisms". In its turn, the US Embassy in Georgia made a statement that "the visit of the Stout destroyer speaks of the US desire to enhance the sea communication safety and is part of the US Naval Forces strategy aimed at increasing the regional stability and sea partnership".
The fact is that the TCSG-123 Turkish flagship also entered the port of Batumi together with the American destroyer. On July, 16, the Turkish ship is also expected to take part in the military exercises together with the Georgian coast guard motorboats.
The exercises are to be started on Wednesday and will become the first exercises since the 2008 five-day war between Georgia and Russia. They are going to be held not far from the Abkhazian coast line.
The day before, Dmitri Medvedev met with the man-of-war's men in Sochi, where he made a number of important statements. "We are all aware of the condition of many ships; we know of the amount of efforts and means we will have to spend to provide the necessary conditions. Nevertheless, even now we are able to show good performance, - the head of the state underlined proudly. - Today, a strategic missile has been successfully launched from a submarine. I am reporting this fact to you and to all the rest who are interested in the matter. The target was hit, and the fragments fell exactly where they were to fall, the Kura training area".
By "all the rest", the Russian president obviously meant the heads of the White House and European Union who should not forget that Russia remains a major player in the geopolitical field and that its opinion should not be neglected.
