«Civilized Approach» to Refugees in Tskhinvali and Tbilisi2009-07-16 12:54
The South Ossetian parliamentarians had a painful impression of their visit to the refugee camp. Almost a year has passed, and people cannot still return to normal life. But, unlike Georgian refugees, they worry only Russian and local authorities, not Europe and the USA. For the latter the South Ossetian refugees seem not to exist.
The other day the deputies of the newly elected Parliament visited the agricultural college hostels and the «Ossetia» holiday camp. Not for a holiday but to see how the refugees were doing. Among them there are some emigrants of the 90s who left the nationalist Georgia and some migrants of last year. The latter, in their turn, are divided into two categories: some escaped from Georgia, afraid of vengeance and oppression, others were deprived of their homes in South Ossetia as a result of the bombings of the Georgian army last August.
«What we have seen today is below any standard. Our impression is painful. As I know, the government is trying to do something but the situation is not improving. But I believe any issue can be resolved. We should just build a hierarchy of priorities for what should be done immediately, as I cannot imagine how these people can spend another winter», said the Vice Speaker of the Parliament Mira Tskhovrebova summarizing the results of their trip.
The deputies listened to all complaints about the refugees' daily life and promised to do their best to help the people.
So far the officials' help was limited to humanitarian aid. As the «Res» information agency said in March, the diet of the families living at the «Ossetia» holiday camp included pasta, condensed milk, tinned fish and meet. «We can see the people are in hard conditions. To the extent possible and with the support of the state we give them our help. For example, during the winter period we provided the people with heaters and wood», told the Chairman of the Committee for Refugees Kazbek Karsanov.
In June the republic authorities started re-registering the refugees. It is aimed at updating the database and ranging the information on family changes, births, deaths, housing conditions. As Kazbek Karsanov explained to the «Res» information agency, the information will be collected by a «special group that will visit the localities and villages to collect all the required data on the refugees ».
According to the Committee for Refugees, on 14 July the number of registered refugees was 2300 people, but the re-registration has not been completed yet.
