Drawing a propaganda bead on Sukhum2009-07-22 15:03
Lately the Georgian side has been especially persistent about the incidents involving Russian border guards on Georgian-Abkhaz border. The latest one is a shootout in Gali district of the republic on July 20. What's the aim of these Gebbels-like information attacks?
Since early summer Abkhazia has been frequently mentioned in reports of Georgian news agencies. The entry of Russian special forces, Russian jets in Abkhazian sky, shootouts in Gali - these are just a few examples. Remarkably the imaginary aggravation on the border coincided with the UN monitors' departure from the region.
Abkhazia where all the incidents allegedly take place reacts to the Georgian assaults with calmness. "Reports by ideological mass media of Georgia on new tensions in Gali district are sheer disinformation", - IA Apsnypress quotes Abkhaz President's Spokesman Christian Bjania. - Any confrontation between the Abkhaz authorities and military structures that were invited on request of the Abkhaz side under the treaty on joint protection of state border is impossible".
But it seems Tbilisi has a better view of the situation in "the breakaway territory" (a cliché of the Georgian agitprop - ed.). A number of Georgian media have recently reported on an alleged shootout in Pichora and Kokhora villages between Russian border guards and local police and the arrival of Interior Minister Otar Khetsia and RSO's Plenipotentiary in Gali District Ruslan Kishmaria to settle the situation. "This is a lie, - Bjania continues. - Both of them were in Sukhum today, each performing his duties".
Abkhaz President's Spokesman didn't skip another piece of "information" by Georgian media on the aircraft with high-ranking Russian officials allegedly landing in Chuburkhindzh village. "These assertions are totally absurd, - Bjania noted. - Everyone who is familiar with the geography of Abkhazia knows that Chuburkhindzh is unable to receive even a hang-glider. That is why I recommend that all Georgian media pros at disinformation revise Abkhaz geography in order to avoid further lapses".
Lapses are followed by new lapses but it is quite possible the international peacekeeping missions will react.
