Saakashvili has “recovered”, the oppositional passions are dying down2009-07-27 22:45
The Americans have again violated the established principle of non-interfering into Georgia's domestic affairs. Although the US Vice President Joe Biden has met all the opposing parties during his visit, Mikhail Saakashvili obviously felt encouraged by the American patron's handshake. The opposition, in its turn, has withdrawn from the city main streets, lowering down its ambitions. Having announced the president's resignation date from time to time, all of a sudden the opposition admitted that it has made only half the way in its "peaceful struggle" against head of the state.
Joseph Biden's visit has done Mikhail Saakashvili much good. The president received "the high" approval of his initiatives which he had brought forward during the discussion in parliament, as well as of his new tasks. Although the media have been spreading rumours that Biden is preparing leaders of Ukraine and Georgia for resignation, there are no signs of it in Tbilisi.
According to The New York Times, it became evident that Saakashvili has escaped political death. The newspaper quotes the opinion of expert Lawrence Scott Sheets from the independent International Crisis Group who is astonished by the Georgian president's ability of recovering after numerous mistakes, from the demonstration break-up in November 2007 to the war with Russia. All those who had been expecting Biden to criticize Saakashvili or inspire the protest actions with his support were disappointed. "This does not mean Saakashvili's troubles are over: one billion dollars allocated by Washington after the war has already been distributed, and the level of unemployment has increased by 17 percent", - the periodical points out.
However, the oppositional Georgian politicians pay attention to the fact that the foreign guest has withheld any praiseful words in respect of the president. "Biden has expressed undoubted support of Georgia in terms of democracy development, but show us at least one phrase in his speech delivered in Tbilisi, by which he expressed his support of Saakashvili personally", - leader of the Democratic Movement - United Georgia Nino Burjanadze stated. In the opinion of experts, Biden was pushing both the Georgians and the Ukrainians to resolve their domestic problems on their own. The USA obviously do not want to get any more kicks from the public community for the immature politicians they support.
