Lavrov believes in Tagliavini
2009-07-28 14:51Russia hopes the report of the EU international mission on the August events to be presented by Heidi Tagliavini at the end of September will be maximally objective as stated by Russian FM Sergey Lavrov on July 27.
"I believe the EU investigative commission looking into the August 2008 events in Caucasus will not toe the mark of political opponents of Russia and will present honest evaluations, - ITAR TASS quotes the Russian diplomat. - We can outline the report out of our contacts". According to Lavrov experts of the commission have done rather objective work. "Now it's most important to keep in check the players that try to hide all faults of the Georgian leaders and adjust the facts to make them less painful to Saakashvili", - the minister added.
Lavrov spoke about other reports the EU is preparing including the document on real demography and human rights situation in Georgia. "This is all that Georgia calls civilized behavior", the Russian FM emphasized reminding that a similar document presented a few years ago simply "revealed all diseases of Saakashvili's regime, his authoritarianism".
As for the report by the EU international group investigating the August events in Caucasus it was supposed to be made public at the end of July. However it was decided in Brussels to give Heidi Tagliavini extra time to do final verification of the new documents the Swiss diplomat had obtained.
"We have acquired a lot of materials from Georgia and Russia over the recent time, that's why it became necessary to prolong the work of the commission", - Interfax quotes Uwe Schramm, commission deputy chairman. - The statement will be objective, any bias is out of question". According to Schramm now it's a 15-member group working on the report including ex generals, "specifically competent" experts on Russia and Caucasus.
It should be remembered that materials of the inquiry committee at the Russian prosecutor's office that proved Georgia was guilty of the death of Russian peacekeepers and civilians in Tskhinval may be of use to Tagliavini, OSinform IA reports. "Those who unleashed aggression against the people of South Ossetia must be subject to due punishment", - Russia's Deputy FM Grigory Karasin believes.
