Biden has put Abkhazia and South Ossetia on the alert2009-07-29 09:51
Having visited Tbilisi last week, the US Vice President Joseph Biden rather left a lot of unanswered questions than gave the answers. The main question is related to the bounds of the USA's friendship with Saakashvili's regime. The viewpoints are different but both Abkhazia and South Ossetia are sure: the military cooperation between Washington and Tbilisi is going to bring no good.
"Georgia's policy, being covered and backed by the West, is actually aimed at destabilizing the situation in the region, - the open letter of MFA of Abkhazia to Joseph Biden says. - In the context of unprecedented financial help provided by the US to the country, the financial authorities continue the process of militarization and are nourishing the idea of a revanchist military intrusion into the territories that do not belong to Georgia". This being the case, the young republic is calling upon the world community to pay attention to the fact that Georgia would not stop its aggressive policy in respect of the minor peoples and go on expanding its military potential by signing cooperation agreements in the military sphere.
"The US' attempt to turn Georgia into a democratic state is destined to fail, for both its leaders and the society continue to think in an imperial way, - the Abkhazian foreign policy administration underlines. - This is initially impossible so long as the nation's main efforts are aimed at returning the lost territories. Those who think that Georgia is able to develop the same way as the Western democracy are very much mistaken". The official Sukhum points out that it was not the free democracy but the "democratic tyranny" that has been developed in Georgia for many years, which fact is confirmed by the regimes of the post-Soviet modern Georgia.
This kind of Sukhum's reaction to Biden's visit to Tbilisi is quite explainable. As is known, the day before the arrival of the distinguished guest, Mikhail Saakashvili appealed to the United States with a request of arms supply to Georgia. However, Biden diplomatically avoided the sore point, having neither rejected the matter, nor agreed to it; still, by its open letter addressed to Biden, Abkhazia underlines its unwillingness to remain a passive observer of the situation.
