Saakashvili’s army is building up muscles2009-07-31 22:59
The Georgian army continues improving its military skills. The Shield-2009 military exercises that were held on July 13-30 at the Orpholo training field have been finished. Mikhail Saakashvili gave positive comments upon these maneuvers. Well, that is not surprising: he is bringing the country's military forces in line with the NATO standards. Yet, are there any other reasons for such intensive training?
According to GHN, an infantry brigade battalion, an armored squadron, the first and second artillery brigade troops, an air defense battalion, as well as the special purpose group representatives took part in the Shield-2009 military exercises. Over a thousand servicemen practiced their military skills during the maneuvers held under command of Devi Chankotadze, Head of the Joint Staff of the country. Military hardware, such as armor, artillery and aviation, was engaged as well. It is also known that the Shield-2009 exercises became the largest-scale maneuvers held by the Georgian army since the last August events.
Mikhail Saakashvili who took part in the events held on the occasion of completing the military maneuvers was satisfied with what he saw. "Our country has survived a war with Russia; it has got its own army and is quite sure-footed", - the Georgian leader is quoted by Novosti-Georgia. - Today I can see that the progress of our army and the level of its knowledge are higher than ever". According to Saakashvili, it is very important that the military experience obtained by the Georgian military forces last August should be used during the exercises. The Georgian leader raised a toast with the following words: "I cannot imagine a profession that would be more important and valuable than military service, - Kavkazski Uzel reports. - Each one of us is under obligation to you". The delegates of the parliament agreed with the president. For instance, Chairman of the International Relationships Committee Akaki Minashvili pointed out that now the Georgian army may claim being the most combat-capable army in the region.
Well, that is, of course, quite a disputable statement; however, one should take into account that the politicians' judgments are obviously based upon their previous impressions of the Georgian army. So, it is quite possible that the Cooperative Longbow/Lancer 2009 and Shield had certain impact upon the military capability of the armed forces. As to the combat mission that the military had faced during the maneuvers, it included elimination of the tactic resources of the enemy that intruded the Georgian territory. Besides, according to Mir television and radio broadcasting company, the mission was to eliminate up to eighty percent of the imaginary enemy's army.
