A meeting in Ergneti has been derailed again: the EU mission is losing score2009-08-04 20:14
The incidents at the Georgian-South-Ossetian border seem to happen with frightening frequency. Besides, as a result of Tskhinval and Tbilisi's repeated mutual accusations of provocative actions the scheduled meeting on developing the incidents preventing mechanism that was to be held in Ergneti never took place. The European Union missioners seem to be quite optimistically-minded: to everyone's surprise, they never found any signs of firing.
Since the middle of last week, the situation at the border of Georgia and South Ossetia continues to get worse. As soon as on the night of July, 30 Tskhinval and Tbilisi accused each other of applying force and the next day, a motor car with civilians blew up, the Ministry of Defense of South Ossetia made a new statement on August, 1. "At 9:25 a.m., two trench mortar shots were made at the observation point in the republic territory from the Georgian settlement of Ditsi adjoining the South-Ossetian village of Ered, - the statement says. - This speaks of the fact that the Georgian party continues making provocative actions in the near-border zones of South Ossetia".
In its turn, Tbilisi took this information as provocative, while the delegate of the Georgian parliament Badri Basishvili referred to the data from Tskhinval as to "total absurd". "The possibility of any fire opened on the Georgian part is completely eliminated", - GHN is quoting. Nevertheless, the parliamentarian's statement has got hardly anything in common with the local residents' declarations, who, according to The Moscow Post, unanimously assert that not only did they hear and see the shots but have nearly got under them. Later on, the foreign policies of Russia and Georgia exchanged their comments regarding the incident.
As is known, on July, 31, a meeting on developing the incidents preventing mechanism in the zone of the Georgian-South-Ossetian conflict was to be held in the village of Ergneti. Such meetings are held with participation of representatives from Georgia, South Ossetia, Russia and EU. The point is that the scheduled negotiations never took place. It is however known that the representatives of the law-enforcement agencies of Georgia and South Ossetia held a non-official conversation and discussed the latest incidents. It is good that the dialogue is continued.
Still, Tskhinval was hardly satisfied with this non-official meeting, for the day before the negotiations, head of the South-Ossetian delegation Merab Chigoev promised to raise the issue of illegal posts set up by the Georgian party and equipped with offensive armament in the territories adjoining the state border of South Ossetia, as Rosbalt informs.
