Moscow and Tskhinval are calling upon the Georgian authorities to come to their senses2009-08-04 17:45
Another incident happened at the border between Georgia and South Ossetia. Ministry of Defense of South Ossetia made a statement that last evening, three trench mortar shots were made from the Georgian village of Plavi in the direction of the village of Otrev located in the Tskhinvalski region. This time, the authorities of the republic made a decision to enter the event of shooting, having not only sent the operational investigative group but also having invited journalists to the site.
According to Ministry of Defense of South Ossetia, shooting took place around ten o'clock in the evening. "One of the shells exploded on the outskirts of the village of Otrev, - an unnamed source in the military administration told RIA Novosti. - The Ossetian party did not rise to it, however, and did not open return fire". At the same time, the interlocutor underlined that the Georgian and South-Ossetian villages are one kilometer from each other, and Otrev is known to be one of the settlements that were the first to face the attack of the Georgian military last August.
However, according to Rosbalt, the Georgian party denies the fact of shooting. For example, head of the local police administration of the Shida Kartli region Vladimir Jugeli announced that "no fire was ever opened". Jugeli accused Russia and South Ossetia of aggravating the situation at the border, while the Imedi Georgian TV channel reported that the day before, there was some firing but it came from Otrev. The firing was allegedly done using machine carbines and grenade launchers; several grenades, according to the recent tradition, "exploded in the air".
Tskhinval and Tbilisi's mutual accusations no longer surprise anyone. It is also interesting to mention that the alarm about aggravating the situation on the border was so far raised only by South Ossetia. On August, 4, president of the young republic Eduard Kokoity underlined: "We feel very disappointed with the fact that all these provocative actions are carried out in the zone supervised by the European observers, who are absolutely inactive, - KP.ru is quoting. - The Georgian party is constantly holding some maneuvers, moving valley fire systems and other military hardware directly towards the border of South Ossetia, getting it ready for the battle and then leaving again". There is another interesting detail: according to the South Ossetian leader, provocative actions on the part of Georgia are carried out in those regions that have not yet been taken under control by the Russian border guards.
