South Ossetia: the border is closed and the military are on the watch2009-08-06 11:09
The latest incidents in the Georgian-South-Ossetian border-zone have pushed the president of the young republic Eduard Kokoity towards the decision to close the state border. Moscow has also made its contribution - the Russian troops of the fourth military base dislocated in Tskhinval and Java were put to intensive routine. The agreed measures on preventing new provocative actions seem to have taken certain effect: the situation on the border has become quieter.
The situation in the South Caucasus still remains disturbed. After a number of incidents at the Georgian-South-Ossetian border, the possibility of repetition of the last August events has been intensely discussed in the world information space. The authorities of South Ossetia have figured out the most unfavorable case scenarios. The day before, president Eduard Kokoity convened a meeting of the republican Security Council, where he listened to the opinion of security officials. Head of the military administration Yuri Tanaev underlined that the Georgian armed forces are reinforcing their units along the whole of the border perimeter, IA Res reports. "Certain armor movements in our direction have been noticed, - Tanaev said. - They are aimed at involving the
South-Ossetian and Russian military into power confrontation in order to have an opportunity of bearing pressure upon the authorities of South Ossetia and Russia at the international level".
In the opinion of Head of the State Security Committee of the republic Boris Attoev, the Georgian party is preparing "measures of provocative nature" in the near-border regions of South Ossetia on the eve of the anniversary of the August 2008 war. "The agitation is held mostly among the young, for the elder generation is rather critical about these measures taken by the Georgian authorities", - Attoev underlined.
The work carried out by the South-Ossetian Security Council resulted in Kokoity's decision to close the border with Georgia. Besides, the South-Ossetian leader was basing not only upon the data about the coming provocative actions but also pursued the objective of minimizing the danger of infiltration of the so-called A/H1N1 virus to South Ossetia, which has already affected 12 people. According to Rosbalt, the president ordered to cease any movements through the state border between the republics, both for the motor way transport and pedestrians.
Meanwhile, in the context of closing the border between Georgia and South Ossetia, the service routine at the fourth Russian military base dislocated in South Ossetia has been enhanced, the Vesti TV channel informs. The Air Force and Air Defense Staff of the North-Caucasian military district were also put to increased readiness state.
