Mikhail Saakashvili has brought the country to a dead-lock

2009-08-06 23:14

3576.jpegWithin the year that has passed since the criminal decision taken by President Saakashvili that has tuned to be so tragic for the people of South Ossetia and Georgia and that implied bringing back by force the autonomous republic, which, in the beginning of the 90s, after the bloody punitive actions undertaken by Tbilisi quitted Georgia, the situation around the two young states of South Ossetia and Abkhazia is gradually taking the form of a status quo.

Legally, the West keeps insisting upon the territorial integrity of Georgia, however, as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov underlined in his interview to Vesti, the Georgian issue is no longer a hindrance in Russia's relationship with the Western countries, including the US. As the minister pointed out, this problem did not influence the contents of the decisions taken in the course of President Obama's visit to Moscow. "Our latest contacts with our Western partners truly prove their different position in respect of Georgia; however, this is done as a normal routine, without any emotions, and the Georgian issue does not interfere with our relationship any longer", - Lavrov pointed out.

"The conflict is no longer the top issue of the global agenda", the Financial Times English newspaper describes the situation with the last year war. "Obama's visit to Moscow in July has clearly shown that the August war did not bring the cold war to life and did not affect the tendency towards a wider Russian-American cooperation, which Obama promised to provide during the electoral campaign", - another English newspaper, Guardian, underlines.

Indeed, the last year was rather eventful both in respect of the domestic and the foreign situation in Georgia. These events have revealed the authoritarian essence of regime of Saakshvili who is capable of any unpredictable actions. Since the beginning of April, the Georgian opposition keeps accusing its president of having brought the country to the final foreign policy failure with his criminal actions.

"First of all, this was a tragedy; it was the tragedy of the Georgian and the Ossetian people. As to political evaluation, there is an evident fact that we are facing a situation in the conflict regions that has been totally changed in our disfavor and we are already facing a different situation in respect of the status of these regions", - a Georgian political expert, editor of the Georgia and The World periodical Irakli Todua believes.
