“Wild geese” from the Ukrainian godfather2009-08-25 20:46
The echo of the last year five-day war in the Caucasus suddenly turned into a thunderous informational scandal. This time, it is Ukraine which is also involved in the conflict apart from its direct participants, Georgia, South Ossetia and Russia. The detonator was the statement of the investigative committee of the Russian prosecutor's office (ICP) about the Ukrainian servicemen having taken part in the Russian-Georgian conflict last August together with the UNA-UNSO militants.
"In the course of investigating the criminal case on the facts of genocide and mass murder of the citizens of the Russian Federation in the territory of South Ossetia, irrefutable evidence of the Ukrainian Nationalistic Organization representatives having acted on the side of the Georgian armed units was received and documented", - the Investigative Committee official representative Vladimir Markin has stated.
The accusations are more than serious. One would not have presented them just for the sake of propaganda, the more so as the ICP is quite a serious institution. So, if the ICP official representative is stating that the Russian party has got irrefutable evidence of the Ukrainian military and members of the UNA-UNSO Ukrainian nationalistic organization being involved in genocide and mass murder of the RF citizens in the territory of South Ossetia, then, things may go as far as the Hague tribunal.
Of course, the Ukrainian authorities immediately responded to these accusations. "This is pure propaganda; there were no military troops of ours there", - Head of the Ukrainian General Staff Press Service Sergey Kuzmin stated in his interview to BBC. According to him, the Ukrainian servicemen were present at the military exercises in Georgia; however, they were withdrawn as the war started.
Well, this refutation seems to be rather strange. Let us remind you that the Immediate Response-2008 Georgian-NATO military exercises were held at the Vaziani military base not far from Tbilisi in July, 15-31. It was stated then that the maneuvers were aimed at "enhancing the operational compatibility of the US and Georgian troops in the event of potential military situations". In a week, Georgia attacked South Ossetia.
Why did not the Ukrainian servicemen return back home as soon as the maneuvers were over? Why did they stay with the Georgian army for another week (and even longer, in the version of ICP RF)? According to Vladimir Markin, there is documentary evidence of the fact that the Ukrainian officers supervised the operation of the air defense missile systems that had been supplied to Georgia by Ukraine. The BUK-M and Osa-Oka ADMSs bearing the marking in Ukrainian are now serving as material evidence.
