Dzuarikau-Tskhinval: anniversary gift2009-08-27 09:41
Dzuarikau-Tskhinval, the world's highest gas pipeline has been launched in South Ossetia. The inauguration was the central event of the festivities on the first anniversary since the republic's independence was recognized, which shows paramount importance of Russia-South Ossetia direct gas channel.
The gas pipeline inauguration was attended by local authorities, representatives of contracting companies and Gazprom deputy CEO Alexander Ananenkov, ITAR-TASS reports. Now Russian natural gas will flow to industrial, agricultural and domestic consumers in a number of districts of the republic. It is believed in Gazprom this will create conditions for the development of production, considerably improve living conditions, will have a positive effect on the region's environment and will bring gas to a number of localities in the republic. It is known South Ossetia has signed a 20-year cooperation agreement with the Russian company.
"Dzuarikau-Tskhinval gas pipeline can be named a life line, - South Ossetian PM Vadim Brovtsev highlighted. - This is not an economic project but a political decision of Russian leaders". Starting the inauguration Alexander Ananenkov said gladly: "Today is a big double holiday: South Ossetia's Independence Day and the day when gas has begun to be supplied to South Ossetia from Russia's integrated gas supply system. We managed to commission a large high-altitude section practically over a year. To build this line we had to work in the mountains in conditions no other gas or oil company had ever worked before". According to the deputy CEO the gas pipeline cost RUR 15 bn though Gazprom doesn't stop at this point and will pursue construction of gas networks for the republic. "Gas to South Ossetia will flow out of Russia's gas transport system which is at least 100 years of guaranteed supplies and security of the new gas pipeline is guaranteed by the state-of-the-art solutions used for its construction", - Ananenkov summed up.
Bringing gas to the new republic was really difficult - on Caucasian ridge the pipe was lifted to the height of 3000 m. Almost half of the gas pipeline runs through high-altitude area at 1500 m, in seismic, landslide, mudflow and avalanche hazardous zones stretching to hundreds of meters and in the areas of tectonic fractures, ITAR-TASS reports.
Earlier Stroyprogress group deputy CEO Yuri Morozov reported on Japanese machines failing at such an out-of-limit altitude. "Only our Chelyabinsk machines could handle it in this situation, - RIA Novosti quoted. - Moreover, it was a real challenge for people suffering from oxygen lack at this altitude".
