Basic training of the Georgian peacemakers2009-09-01 20:12
On the 1st of September, the American instructors start training 750 soldiers of the Georgian soldiers in the context of preparing them for the military operations in Afghanistan. Will the peacemakers from Tbilisi be able to help the United States in their struggle against terrorists? This will be clear only in November. Nevertheless, Mikhail Saakashvili's desire to please his main partners is now criticized not only by political experts but by the politicians as well.
The news about sending the soldiers to Afghanistan was taken ambiguously in Georgia. On the one hand, the training will be supervised by the famous marines from over the water; while on the other hand, it is not clear in what way Saakashvili's army battalion will be able to help the Americans that have stuck in Asia like in a bog. Many of the military experts in Georgia are stressing the fact that it is practically impossible to train the Georgian units within half a year, considering the fact that the US army spends years to prepare its soldiers for any insignificant operation, as Izvestia informed.
Nevertheless, following the resolution of the parliament, the Georgian forces military service in Afghanistan was given "the green light". The US Embassy in Georgia has made an official statement that in the course of the training, special attention will be given to those skills that will be necessary for the Georgian soldiers to act together with other military partner-units in the counter-terrorist environment, as Civil.ge reported. According to the statement, Georgia's desire to send the battalion to take part in the operation aimed at supporting international security in order to help the NATO partners is "an invaluable contribution to providing stability in Afghanistan and ensuring safety".
A group of American marines has already arrived in Tbilisi. It is known that the marines are going train the 31st battalion of the armed forces third brigade dislocated in Kutaisi. The soldiers of this battalion will be the first to go to Afghanistan in November as part of the squadron. It is rumored in the Georgian Ministry of Defense that the battalion will be sent "without any national limits", which means that Tbilisi will not set any restrictions on their movement and the maintenance of their mission in Afghanistan.
