Ombudsman to stand as mayoral candidate?2009-09-08 09:53
Georgia's Ombudsman Sozar Subari has long positioned himself as the defender of the opposition. However until recently he was discreet about his future. Journalists were left to guess. His ombudsman's powers expire on September 16. Now it's already clear that the ranks of the opposition have got reinforcements. Sozari is joining the opposition.
Sozar Subari terminates his five-year activity as ombudsman passing over to the opposition, VZGLYAD correspondent in Tbilisi reports. However, his opposition-mindedness has long been known. As early as in July GHN agency (Georgia) reported on ombudsman Sozar Subari's plans to do politics or establish his own NGO after his term expired. But Sozari was vague about his plans. "I haven't completely made up my mind about the choice. It all depends on the situation", - Subari said then.
According to him in case he moves into politics it is hard to say at this stage whether he will create his own political party or join an existent one. "Frankly speaking I'm less inclined toward politics - I'm more in favor of creating an NGO. But all things are possible", - the ombudsman remarked.
Presently as VZGLYAD reports Subari confirmed being invited to join Defend Georgia! Movement chaired by Levan Gachechiladze, an opposition leader. He stood as a 2008 presidential candidate from the United Opposition comprising nearly 8 parties. In April his brother - Georgy Gachechiladze (singer Utsnobi) and he became leaders of the opposition movement.
In summer Levan Gachechiladze announced creation of Defend Georgia! public movement emphasizing it was not a political party but a public association that would consolidate all public forces. It was supposed to unite reputable science, art and culture figures as well as active opposition supporters that took part in the rallies started on April 9.
So far no newspaper specifies what Subari's reply to the invitation was. In the meantime he stated: "There is enormous scope for human rights violation in the country". According to Subari "people are subject to persecution for nonconformity, for supporting opposition; business people sympathizing with the opposition get politically terrorized".
