Who benefits from problems in Gal district2009-09-08 12:03
Alarming news was reported from Gal district of Abkhazia last weekend - a shootout between policemen patrolling the near-border zone and criminals resulting in two deaths. It seems the criminal elements in the unquiet district are not going to stop: over the past year it's not the first assault on law-enforcement officers.
The incident took place in Bargyab village of Gal district of the republic. The patrolling policemen spotted a group of armed persons and then the shooting broke out, Caucasian Knot reports. As a result a police officer and a criminal were injured. According to Gal District Police Chief Lawrence Kogonia, local policeman Ramaz Abukhba and Dato Ubilava, a criminal, were taken to hospital.
Ramaz Abukhba died not regaining consciousness. Ubilava died too. Before death he had time to say he was a resident in this village and confessed he and his accomplices had been planning a robbery in the neighborhood. Investigators suspect him of a number of assaults related to robbery. Most probably two Ubilava's sidekicks (now on the wanted list) will clear up the situation.
Curiously enough some Georgian media reported on the incident in quite an opposite way informing of a clash between Russian militaries and Abkhazians in Gal district. Ramaz Abubkha was presented as an ex police officer. It would seem a shootout in an unquiet district is a completely internal Abkhazian affair. However Tbilisi makes up a new lie against Russian border guards that help their Abkhaz colleagues in compliance with the treaties on friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance.
Besides, but for the tragic events of last August the Russian military contingent in the new republics would have been limited to Russian peacekeepers stationed there. By the way recently Abkhaz president Sergey Bagapsh remarked: "How can we talk to the current Georgian leadership when the tanker carrying petrol here was seized?", - Gazeta.ru reported. - We can't be involved in such criminal activities like Georgia is". Instead of building dialogue with Sukhum Tbilisi regularly comes down with torrents of lies and hostile comments.
As for Gal district of Abkhazia it has been more frequently been referred to in Georgian news recently. On August 28 Georgian Interior Ministry stated about two Georgian policemen allegedly wounded as a result of the shooting on the police office from the Abkhaz side, but official Sukhum disproved this information. Moreover Lawrence Kogonia reported that by the information of Gal district law-enforcement bodies the Georgian policemen were carrying out operational activities on the border resulting in a shootout.
