Chavez initiated the flow of Sukhum and Tskhinval’s recognition2009-09-10 22:50
The long-awaited decision was taken today by leader of Venezuela during negotiations in Moscow. Georgia took the news sarcastically, while South Ossetia and Abkhazia have already expressed their gratitude to Hugo Chavez and the Russian parliamentarians expressed hope that Venezuela will be followed by other countries.
The Russian media announced negotiations with Hugo Chavez to be very complicated. As Commersant reminded, the president of Venezuela is coming to Russia "not just as a guest but also in order to take part in concluding transactions which generally cost billions of dollars".
This time, he also intended to acquire submarines and armor in the context of the changes in the geostrategic situation in South America. However, currently Venezuela has not got enough means to buy expensive arms, for its petroleum proceeds have drastically decreased because of the world crisis. Nevertheless, "Russia is ready to support Venezuela by supplying arms against credit, while Moscow recons to enhance the oil alliance with Caracas and persuade it to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia in return", - Commersant forecasted. Moscow planned to sign a package of ten documents, including those on cooperation in the military and technical field, oil and gas area and space development field.
Negotiations started successfully and by the middle of the day President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez announced that his country recognized the two Caucasian republics. "I would like to take this opportunity to announce that Venezuela also recognizes the independence of the republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia", - Chavez said during the meeting with his Russian colleague Dmitriy Medvedev in his country seat of Barvikha. The guest from Caracas underlined that on that day Venezuela was going to initiate the procedures required to legalize this fact.
"Thank you, - Medvedev answered. - We have always thought recognition to be a sovereign step for a state; it is up to the state to recognize or not. Still, we are not indifferent to the future of those republics and I would like to thank you for taking such a decision", - he added.
It was last August that Hugo Chavez said that Venezuela, unlike the majority of the European countries and the USA, associated itself with Russia in recognizing Abkhazia and South Ossetia. He also called President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili "the US' puppet", Kavkazskiy Uzel reports. "Georgia initiated aggression against South Ossetia. Russia took up a clearly-defined position. That is the way we would behave if someone attacked us, - president of Venezuela stated in Caracas. - Russia has recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. We support Russia, for Russia is right".
