Olympic peace breakers2009-09-11 16:41
Tbilisi stays true to itself. Last year it unleashed the aggression against South Ossetian civilians and killed Russian peacekeepers on the Beijing Olympics opening day. Now the Georgian authorities launched a new attack objecting to holding 2014 Olympics in Sochi (Russia). A year ago the attempt to change the IOC's decision and relocate the Games to a different country failed. The Russian Olympic Committee doesn't take these threats seriously.
"Their belly buttons will untie preventing Russia from holding 2014 Olympics in Sochi", - this is a direct sportive comment of the Russian Olympic Committee Spokesman Gennady Shvets on information of the Georgian media for GeorgiaTimes. "This is so silly that I don't even want to waste time on comments. What can I say? If a country refuses to take part in the Olympics it is subject to sanctions. In particular, its sportsmen are divested of the right to represent the country at the next Olympics. This holds true for Georgia, if its national team doesn't come to Sochi», - the representative of Russia explained. As for Tbilisi's possibility to raise the relocation issue for the International Olympic Committee or other international organizations forcing
them to put pressure on the IOC Shvets called all this "nonsense".
Recently the desire to boycott the Sochi Olympics was expressed by Georgia's Foreign Affairs Parliamentary Committee Chairman Akaki Minashvili.
"Olympics symbolize peace. Hosting the games is a controversial event for the country that changed the borders with the use of force and ethnic cleansing in the 21st century", - he said hypocritically. Earlier the parliamentarian tried to draw parallels between the current state of affairs and 1980 Olympics in Moscow boycotted by some countries on the pretext that the USSR army was taking part in hostilities in Afghanistan.
The international commission investigating into the causes and circumstances of last year's war in South Ossetia has presented no official statement as yet. The only thing is certain: on the day of Olympic peace when the peace flame was lit up in Beijing the Georgian troops began massive shelling of Tskhinval, the capital of South Ossetia. This is how Georgia lost its vote in solving Olympic issues after the August aggression in 2008.
