A schoolbag from Saakashvili2009-09-14 23:47
Today, it is the first day of a new school year in the Georgian public (state) schools. In the context of the event, the authorities decided to please the teachers by increasing their salary and the parents by renovating the school buildings. However, there are still a lot of problems in the field of education. For instance, the Laborites are demanding free schoolbooks and the introduction of the subject of Religion depending on the pupils' confession.
The beginning of a new school year in Georgia depended upon the pace of repair works completion. Repair works were performed in approximately three hundred schools of the country. About eight hundred schools were supplied with new furniture including desks and chairs. In most private schools (Russian schools as well), the lessons started on the 1st of September. In such schools, it is the headmasters who fix the end date of summer holidays.
At present, according to Ministry for Education and Science, almost all of the state schools are ready to start academic activities, except the schools in the Onskiy region that suffered from an earthquake. The school year will start in a week in this region. "As to the schools of the Ambrolaurskiy region, the teaching process was started there today; however, more earthquake shocks may hinder the studies", - Deputy Head of Regional Coordination of Ministry of Education Zodiko Parkosadze told the Georgian media.
All the first-graders were given a traditional "present from the president": a schoolbag with a number of textbooks. Besides, children from the families that suffered during the August 2008 war, as well as children from the socially unsecured families will get state financial assistance of 100 laris. Today, President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili met the children from refugees' families that settled in a new cottage community in Tserivani. Naturally, the president's press service presented the information as the demonstration of victims of the "Russian aggression". The true attitude of the children and their parents that had to escape South Ossetia after Tskhinval was attacked by the Georgian army remains unknown.
Meanwhile, Minister of Education and Science Nikolay Gvaramia appealed on TV to the schoolchildren and teachers of the country and wished them success. This morning, the minister came to one of the Tbilissian schools where his son is studying and congratulated the teachers and the schoolchildren on the beginning of a new school year, which coincided this time with the start of a new Church year according to the Orthodox calendar.
