A sweep in culture and sports2009-09-18 11:49
The Georgian opposition is searching for a new strategy, promising a "turbulent autumn". Meanwhile, delighted in its supremacy, the power decided to "establish order" in culture and sports. Earlier, the resignation of art director of Film Actor Theatre named after M.I.Tumanishvili Keti Dolidze had been announced, for she used to appear at the oppositional meetings too often. During the Report to People action held in Rustavi, Prime Minister Nika Gilauri recommended the head of the Sports Department to sort things out with football as well. Today, President of the Georgian Football Federation Nodar Akhalkatsi submitted resignation.
Stage director Keti Dolidze's dismissal as art director of the Film Actor Theatre became publicly known last week. Yesterday, this information was officially confirmed by Ministry for Culture, Sports and Protection of Monuments of Georgia. According to the ministry, the decision was taken because the art director failed to provide the staging of new plays which led to temporary suspension of the theatre activity.
Besides, Keti Dolidze allegedly tried to disrupt the international theatre festival scheduled in Tbilisi for September 26. According to the ministry officials, she wrote letters to other stage directors she knew, recommending them to boycott "this non-democratic festival", the Georgian media reported.
Keti Dolidze herself estimates the decision on her dismissal taken by Ministry for Culture as political punishment. She stated to the GHN agency that her dismissal is attributed to Tbilisi International theatre festival scheduled for September 27 in Theatre named after K.E.Mardjanishvili. Dolidze made a stand against making up the festival committee of "governmental members". According to her, Mayor of Tbilisi Gigi Ugulava acted as member of the festival committee as well.
"I would like to know where the country government has got 850 thousand laris and what for the committee members are paid 2000 euro per month. I made a stand against this very fact and they did not forgive me. I will not take part in a festival where Ugulava himself is member of the festival committee", - Keti Dolidze stated.
Keti Dolidze is going to defend her rights. She received the message about her dismissal while being on vacation. She said that Ministry for Culture was to give her precise reasons for her dismissal before canceling the contract.
