Ukrainian surprises for friendly Georgia2009-09-21 09:00
Color revolutions have practically turned Georgia and Ukraine into closely related countries. Besides, the orange Ukraine and the rose-colored Georgia together with the Balts have been keeping company against Russia. Kiev had to face another wave of tension with Moscow because of the August events. Despite the current pro-Western policy in Ukraine, relations between Kiev and Tbilisi may as well enter a new phase. Delegate of the Regions Party fraction, former Minister of Victor Yanukovitch's government Anatoliy Tolstoukhov stated that Ukraine might recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia after the presidential elections. The representative of Timoshenko's block promises to provide
support to South Ossetia. Today, there came the continuation of a scandal related to the participation of the Ukrainian specialists in the August war.
General Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine confirmed that the Ukrainian specialists had serviced the air-defense forces in Georgia during the August 2008 war. This was stated today by Ukrainian newspaper Segodnya (Today). The newspaper is referring to an unnamed source in law-enforcement authorities.
According to the source, a group of civil specialists was sent to Georgia from the town of Balaklea for serving the ADMS Buk-M1 sold by Ukraine. According to the periodical, those people stayed in Georgia from August 5 to 13, 2008. "They refute participation in military actions but they do not deny having serviced the military equipment", - the source added.
So far, the official sources keep denying everything.
Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine Renat Kuzmin confirmed the fact of carrying out a check up on the matter. The results of the check-up were not reported. Press Secretary of Chief of Security Service of Ukraine Marina Ostapenko stated that the information on the Ukrainian citizens taking part in the war was wrong, Lenta.ru informs.
However, the statements made by the orange Kiev are not very pleasant for Tbilisi. Recently, people's delegate of the Regions Party fraction Anatoliy Tolstoukhov stated that Ukraine might recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia after presidential election.
"It is very pleasant to hear that such countries as Venezuela have recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia; however, it is more important for this process to go on in the post-Soviet territory, - the delegate underlined. - Ukraine could make its contribution in recognizing the independence of these states".
