Lukoshenko: virtuoso in diplomacy2009-10-05 18:39
October has already begun. Now it's Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko's turn to fulfill his promise and recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states. In September the Belarus leader stated the parliament would consider the issue at the autumn session. But again Sukhum and Tskhinval are not on the agenda. However, Lukashenko has found a pretext not to recognize them: this time the journalists are in fault.
Belarus should have recognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia long ago but for the interference of Moscow and central mass media in particular. This was the statement Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made at a press conference.
How did the Russian mass media offend Alexander Grigoryevich? Lukashenko explains: state-controlled media attacked him. "They say "we didn't give 500 mln so they didn't recognize the republics. As if recognition or non-recognition costs money. Then I told him: "Wait a minute, guys, this won't do", - Lukashenko stated.
And how about the promises made before? They remain in force.
The Belarus leader emphasizes that Minsk has marvelous relations with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. "Belarus took Russia's definite position supporting it at all levels. But recognition is a serious act. All CIS republics categorically refused to do that", - Alexander Lukashenko noted, RBC remarks.
Alexander Grigoryevich is a political virtuoso: regardless of today's statements - not entirely diplomatic ones - he keeps the hope alive simply asking the Russian side not to rush. "Generally speaking, recognition of these two republics is a painful issue for Belarus, this should have been done long ago, but it's not our fault. I believe we'll sort it out", - the president summed up.
In September interview with Lietuvos Rytas Lukashenko stated the Belarus parliament would consider the issue on South Ossetia's and Abkhazia's recognition in October without specifying a date though. He made a laconic remark: "We have a new parliament that starts working on October 2, if I'm not mistaken, the consideration of this issue is preplanned", - the president said.
Either October seemed to be a long time ahead or Alexander Grigoryevich changed his position again over a month but the issue on recognition of the republics was not on today's agenda of Belarus parliament.
This was a newsbreak for today's press conference. But apparently there was too little time to invent a credible legend: that's why Lukashekno backtracked again blaming journalists this time. After all, they are the fourth estate. They must be responsible.
