Woodcutters from Gremiskhevi: victims of mass deception2009-10-27 16:25
A woodcutting crew from Georgia was detained in South Ossetia again. Tbilisi represented this fact as the abduction of peaceful citizens. As to the luckless men from the village of Gremiskhevi, either they did not know the exact location of the boundary, or just believed the Georgian media who have promised that Tskhinval would leave the boundaries open.
Today, Georgia publicly accused South Ossetia of abducting its citizens. This time, it was 16 citizens of the village of Gremiskhevi of the Dushetskiy region who were concerned. "For the moment, we know only about the fact of abduction. We have also found out that the abducted persons were taken to Akhalgori", - Alexander Maisuradze told the InterpressNews agency in the morning.
According to the information provided by the administration of Dusheti, the citizens of another village of Burgelebi are missing, too. According to District Head Zurab Otiashvili, the EU observers are already informed of the affair. The fact of abduction of the Georgians was confirmed by the Georgian MIA.
Later on, the details came from MFA. Deputy Minister Alexander Nalbandov said that the villagers were not abducted but detained in the territory adjoining the Leningorskiy (Akhalgorskiy) region of South Ossetia. As the officer underlined, "authorities are intensively working on releasing the detainees".
Ultimately, the Ossetian authorities commented upon the incident and cleared the air.
It turns out that yesterday the Russian border guards detained some citizens of Georgia near the village of Salbieri, who, firstly, have illegally crossed the state border and secondly, chopped wood illegally. This was reported to IA Res by the South-Ossetian president's deputy ambassador for post-conflict settlement Merab Chigoev.
"At present, the Georgian detainees have been taken to the Leningorskiy region of South Ossetia and given over to the officers of the local prosecutor's office. A check-up is being conducted on the fact", - he added.
As is known, Georgia regards the border with South Ossetia to be administrative and considers the natural resources of the republic to be its own. The forests in the frontier zone have many times been the reason for developing conflict situations.
For instance, in June, the Georgians blamed the Ossetians for the armed robbery of the citizens of the near-border village of Perevi. In the course of investigation it was found out that security was tightened in this locality, which is shared between the two countries, because of the illegal wood chopping in the Ossetian territory.
