U.S. frustrating Georgia’s hopes?
2009-10-30 17:17 Being a professional anti-crisis diplomat (Bass headed the U.S. State Department Operational Center dealing with the settlement of problems and crises related to the U.S. Embassies throughout the world), he voiced the unpleasant news at the end of his speech.Bass underlined that the anti-ballistic missile (ABM) system elements will not be located in the territory of those countries that are not the NATO members. Earlier, there had been passionate debates on the matter: many parliamentarians asserted that Washington was surely going to pick Georgia for locating the "European safety umbrella".
A cold shower was poured upon the heads of the Georgian politicians by the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense Alexander Vershbow who stayed in Georgia on October 19-20. He stated then that U.S. have got no plans to located any ABM systems in Georgia. However, Tbilisi seemed to still cherish the hope for the beneficial partnership with the USA and Bass again made the Georgians come down from their dreams.
However, the high-ranking diplomat left the Georgians with a certain hope, having assured that Georgia will, perhaps, have the chance to use the elements of the U.S.' ABM system, as Kavkazskiy Uzel reports.
"AMB is NATO's project. We are not speaking about locating AMB in those countries that are not members of NATO; still, it does not mean that those countries that are not members of NATO but that have connection with the alliance cannot use the system. Neither do we assert that we will stop supporting Georgia in its enforcement of safety and in military field", - the ambassador underlined.
A statement made by Alexander Vershbow on the same day turned to be much less pleasant for Tbilisi. The U.S. government is well aware of the fact that it will take Georgia and Ukraine years to join NATO. This was stated by Vershbow during the hearing dedicated to Obama's administration policy in respect of Organization on Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), as radio Voice of Russia reports.
Will the current authorities explain such an "unfriendly" position of the White House, which seemed to be the most desired partner and friend in recent years, to the fellow countrymen that have grew tired of conflicts and crises? Will the opposition be able to convince the people of the country that they were mistaken in 2003 and that they have spent six years on illusions and delusive hopes?
Perhaps, a Georgian journalist, who said in his web log that Georgia is slightly disoriented now, is quite right.
