- Legalized patriotism 2009-11-19 10:31 The Patriot’s Act, which has long been the subject of passionate discussions of the Georgian politicians will, perhaps, be legalized despite the protest expressed by radical opposition in October when the topic of “legalizing patriotism” was touched upon. By the way, the document “concerning patriotism” was initiated in the parliament by another oppositionist from the parliamentary minority. Our correspondent has found out what Tbilisi thinks about passing such a “patriotic” document.
- Abkhazia’s unrequited Christian love 2009-11-18 17:47 The message sent by the Abkhaz Church to the Georgian and Russian “sisters” was ignored. The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) did not alter its position in respect of the territory of the Georgian patriarchy, while the Georgian Orthodox Church (GOC) is contemplating upon an answer to such “nonsense”. Did the Abkhaz priests appeal for help in “restoring the canonical status of the Church in Abkhazia” in vain?
- Opposition Waiting for American Support 2009-11-18 16:31 Though Georgian opposition leaders regularly speak of a need to restore contacts with Moscow, their main hopes are still linked with Washington. There is hardly a single person who would not have visited the Department of State for consultations. In spite of a quiet political autumn, the oppositionists are attacking their American friends with appeals to influence Saakashvili who has lost the image of a democrat. Will they hear the voice of Georgian politicians on the banks of the Potomak?
Maestro TV Channel with its Cell No. 5 live talk-show, which used to encourage the opposition in spring, is going to start a new project. The People's Court program initiated by leader of the Tetrebi (The White) movement Termur Shashiashvili is going to be launched this month. Will the accusations he has prepared mobilize the people to new protest actions?
Surely, someone in Georgia must be sorry that the May explosion not far from Maestro TV Company was not strong enough to make it go off air forever.
Recently, the independent TV Channel is launching a new project that is going to be rather unpleasant for the country's government and Mikhail Saakashvili personally.
The point at issue is the People's TV-Court; the relevant materials for the program have been thoroughly gathered since June by former governor of the Imeretinskiy region, current leader of the Tetrebi movement Temur Shashiashvili.
However, the compromising information might fail to reach the audience. Before the project launch, founder of the TV Channel Mamuka Glonti reported that the authorities are pressing upon the cable TV channels to suspend Maestro's broadcasting. The channel does not have its own frequency, so if the connection with the cable networks is broken the channel will be able to broadcast its programs only through the Internet.
Maestro acquired the license for satellite broadcasting in summer but the channel has got no opportunity to use it so far. The new technology was supposed to be applied since September 15; later on, this term was suspended until October.
However, this turned out to be impossible as well. As Mamuka Glonti explained to portal Business Georgia, the TV Company is to make monthly payment of 18 thousand dollars to get access to the satellite and the channel does not have the sum. Partially, the lack of money is attributed to the government, which holds control over entrepreneurs and does not allow any commercial integration on the oppositional TV.
Thus, Maestro's audience is going to get worse unless the pressure upon the cable companies is ceased.
What are the authorities afraid of? The People's Court initiator Shashiashvili has already told about several crimes of the head of state. The first one was Mikhail Saakashvili's occasional knocking against a passer-by, which resulted in the man's death; still, the president managed to escape any responsibility. According to former governor of the Imeretinskiy region, this was what Badri Patarkatsishvili, a tycoon and an oppositionist, wanted to accuse his opponent of. Last year Patarkatsishvili died in London.
Shashiashvili also blamed the president for being in contact with the criminal authorities.
