Ombudman’s office defended creators of offensive videos about Georgian Patriarch
2009-11-03 18:39At today's meeting of non-governmental and public organisations, held today in the Public Defender of Georgia office, the creation of offensive videos against the Catholicos Patriarch and institution of criminal case over it were discussed.
After the meeting the representatives of a number of NGOs worked out and signed the address to the Interior Minister and the Minister of Justice of Georgia. In this document they protested against criminal case started against a student and a school student, who shot the videos and posted them in the Internet.
According to the statement, the start of the criminal prosecution "is a severe violation and restriction of freedom of speech and opinion expression". According to those who signed the paper, there are no legal grounds for prosecution.
Yesterday the ombudsman's office addressed the Interior Ministry and the Ministry of Justice and requested explanation of the start of the criminal case over the creation and posting of videos, offensive for Ilia II.
They also expressed hope for urgent response as "it concerns one of the core principles of the rights and freedoms of a person - freedom of expression".
