Tales about “associated membership”
2009-11-05 15:10 "The idea of constant suggestion of interim statuses, sub-statuses, phases, periods and other tricks is realized in order to avoid the precise statement that there will be no membership in EU. Today, it is either stated, or, at least, understood", - stated in October Director for investigative program Russia in Global and Regional Context of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs Arkadiy Moshes, according to agency Novosti-Armenia.While commenting upon the current stage of negotiations, Moshes gave a rather skeptic evaluation of the probability of the Eastern Partnership countries' joining EU. "When one considers the EU's latest documents on the Eastern Partnership initiative, it becomes clear that they are emptied of all substance, so the prospect of introducing a visa-free regime is out of the question", - Moshes noted.
It is most likely that Europe will try to obtain only those agreements that imply certain benefit, extending its commercial field, facilitating the transit of energy products and the exclusion of illegal aliens. At the same time, it will remain as closed and inaccessible for Georgia as it was before.
At any rate, Europe cannot agree to introduce a visa-free regime with Georgia during the economical crisis. Those Georgian migrants that put up scuffles in the Austrian and Polish camps seem to be enough for Europe, and it is surely not going to grant any accession to Georgia with its unpredictable and, despite the criticism of Heidi Tagliavini's commission, unsinkable government.
