Alik Bzhania, the ex-officer of the Georgian army was granted refugee status in Russia.
According to the Federal Migration Service of Russia, his request was considered in the order prescribed by the Russian legislation.
Konstantin Poltoranin, the FMS spokesman said Bzhania was granted refugee status some time before - Interfax.
Previously Georgia Times reported that 35-year old officer crossed the Georgian-Russian border on May 23rd and turned to Russian military asking for shelter.
In his interview to the Echo of Moscow he told after his shift he dressed in civil clothes, arrived in Poti, passed by Abkhazian post and came up to the Russian one.
He also said for two years he had served in the navy and commanded a ship in Poti.
He had to leave service due to family reasons. After the August 2008 conflict he returned to military service as a border guard. He highlighted in the course of 5-day war he was in reserve.
On June 9th the FMS gave him confirmation his request was being considered.
