Children as an issue for Geneva debates2009-11-11 09:59
Mikheil Saakashvili took the teenager scandal to the international level. What's there to be done if the president wasn't able to take care of his poor young people and schoolchildren have to commit crimes in South Ossetia? At least he should appear interested. But why rage against Russia that is restoring order in Georgia's ex autonomy and the EU for "over-reserved" intercession?
It is convenient to make a self-promotion campaign on the teenagers detained in South Ossetia. Children are sacred. As soon as they are presented as "victims of occupants and separatists" Russia will appear as a monster and Mikheil Saakashvili - as a defender of the undeservingly punished.
Recently the president of Georgia went to the parents of the detainees suspected of stealing and storing arms and illegal crossing of the border. Their names are Georgy Romelashvili, Aleko Sabadze, Viktor Buchukuri and Levan Khmiadashvili.
He had to console not only the kids' families but parliamentary oppositionists from the Christian-Democratic movement too. As it was specified by the speaker of Georgian parliament David Bakradze "when it comes to liberating our children political views are of no importance". The meeting in near-border Tirdznisi village must become "the example of cooperation between the government and opposition on the issues that unite us".
On the whole, both the authorities and opposition enjoy such a noble task as liberation of Ossetian captives.
Saakashvili made the best of the occasion. He promised to bring up the issue with US Vice President Joseph Biden during the preplanned telephone call and asked the French ambassador for a telephone audience of Nicolas Sarkozy, the guarantor of the ceasefire agreement with Russia. Since according to the version of Georgian politicians it's Russia's fault that Georgian teenagers were caught in the act in South Ossetia.
Saakashvili asserts it's Moscow's way to test international community for tolerance. If there is no overreaction the provocations will continue.
The statements EU monitors made calling to treat children in compliance with the international law are not enough. Generally speaking the Georgian president does not approve of Europe's stand on Russia.
"What does that mean receiving the Russian president in Berlin for the celebration and discussing with him, like with a great democrat, the destruction of the Berlin wall?" - he questions underlining that at that very time the Georgian children are allegedly rotting in Tskhinval jail.
