“Maestro” as New Revolution Herald?2009-11-13 22:43
Melpomene patronizes Georgia. It is enough to remember a galaxy of talented actors and film directors. But theatre has a soft corner in Georgian politicians' hearts, too. PR resources are the favourite weapon of the head of state and his opponents. So there is no danger of boredom for Georgians. The Maestro opposition channel is strengthening its positions. It has been headed by the ex Georgian ambassador in Russia Erosi Kitsmarishvili. The political show must go on.
A lot of juicy scandals have happened both to the Maestro TV channel and with the ex Georgian ambassador in Russia Erosi Kitsmarishvili who is currently managing the channel. Thus, during the spring's protest actions the Vice Premier Georgy Baramidze declared that the Maestro TV company advertised a coup d'état and a railway blockage.
According to the Georgian newspaper Alija, Baramidze stressed that, in spite of the above-mentioned fact, the authorities did not close the opposition channels. In September the head of Maestro Mamuka Glonti complained of Saakashvili to the UN, accusing the president of lying. From a UN tribune Saakashvili announced that it was him personally to license the opposition TV channel outside Georgia. Glonti said that the license provision is dictated by law, but Maestro is broadcast only in the regions, while businessmen are forbidden to place their advertisement on the channel.
This channel is planning to launch a TV project called «People Judge Authorities» to publicly discuss some concrete actions of the authorities and the decisions taken by the government at any level, in legal terms.
Just some time ago it became known that Maestro was to be managed by Erosi Kitsmarishvili for three years. The journalists learnt about it from Mamuka Glonti and from Kitsmarishvili himself. Glonti denied also the messages of several mass media representatives on possible sale of the TV channel, noting that "not a single percent of the Maestro share has been sold". In his turn, Kitsmarishvili said that the TV channel would keep its independence.
He also told the journalists that currently a concept is being developed that will «mainly serve what this TV channel should serve and what it is serving now: its spectators' interests». The activity of the TV company will be controlled by the Board of Guardians featuring some representatives of non-government organizations and some journalists.
