Abkhazia’s unrequited Christian love2009-11-18 17:47
The message sent by the Abkhaz Church to the Georgian and Russian "sisters" was ignored. The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) did not alter its position in respect of the territory of the Georgian patriarchy, while the Georgian Orthodox Church (GOC) is contemplating upon an answer to such "nonsense". Did the Abkhaz priests appeal for help in "restoring the canonical status of the Church in Abkhazia" in vain?
Yesterday, Head of the Abkhaz diocese priest Vissarion Aplia sent a letter of love and appeal for help to Patriarchs of Georgia and Moscow. He prayed to provide assistance in restoring the canonical status of the Church in the republic.
Neither Moscow, nor Tbilisi has given an official response so far. As was stated by ROC to newspaper Commersant, the position of Cyril, who met with Catholicos Ilia the Second in Azerbaijan last week, did not alter. The Russian Orthodoxy recognized the canonical territory of the Georgian Church including Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
"This letter is a derisive gesture towards the Georgian Church which will only cause irritation", - the message was commented upon by Director of Institute of Religion and Law Roman Lunkin.
As to the Georgian patriarchy, they have not yet decided whether to respond to the appeal made by the primate of the self-announced autocephaly. "It is difficult to give a serious answer to such nonsense", - stated Press-Secretary of the Georgian Patriarchy father David Sharashenidze.
Let us remind you that Head of the Abkhaz Church Vissarion announced official separation from the Georgian Orthodox Church on September 15.
Now Vissariion decided to officially notify Cyril and Ilia the Second of this "happy event". "There can be no other event as heartwarming for the Mtskhetskiy catholicosate as the regaining of its sisterly Church, the Abkhaz Orthodox Church of Pitsundskiy catholicosate", - his letter says.
As Aplia explains, there were serious grounds for establishing a separate church. "Since 1993, after the military actions were ceased in September, the spiritual charge of the territory of the Republic of Abkhazia was completely suspended", - he underlines.
It is true that during the civil war in 1992-1993, Metropolitan of Sukhum Daniil (Datuashvili) supported the Georgian party. After its defeat he left Abkhazia together with the Georgians, whom he called his spiritual flock. For 12 years he has been paying no attention to them. This fact is mentioned by a historian, a graduate of Moscow Ecclesiastical Academy celibate deacon David (Sarasania) in one of his essays on the matter.
