Georgia set for new lawsuit against Megafon

2009-11-19 13:38

Georgia is going to sue Megafon (Russia) in court again. The issue will be considered at today's session of The Interim Parliamentary Commission on restoration of the country's territorial integrity.

The Georgian National Communication Commission representatives are invited to the session to inform the deputies on response to illegal, as the Georgian side claims, activities of the Russian companies in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

As commission chairman Shota Malashkhia states Megafon cell operator (Russia) has been pursuing illegal activity "in the Georgian territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia" for over a year.

The Georgian National Communications Commission has already won its case against Megafon at Tbilisi City Court imposing a USD 600 thousand fine on the Russian company.

Nonetheless, Megafon continues its "unlawful activity" and Georgia is set to file another lawsuit against it. In case the Georgian side wins the company will have to pay a USD 1 mln fine this time.

The issue of Abkhazia's transfer to Russian telephone codes will also be discussed at the commission session.
