Actions of the Authorities Urge Oppositionists to Consolidation

2009-11-23 22:59

4648.jpegOn the sixth anniversary of the «revolution of roses» oppositionists had a flash of hope for consolidation. Two of opposition leaders who used to be the main presidential aspirants started speaking of co-operation. They are the ex full-time ambassador of Georgia in the UN, leader of the «Alliance for Georgia» Irakly Alasania and the ex revolutionary partner of Saakashvili, ex Speaker of the Parliament Nino Burdjanadze, head of the radical «Democratic Movement - United Georgia».

At the end of last week a famous oppositionist, ex candidate for presidency, co-founder of the movement «Protect Georgia» Levan Gachechiladze declared that Georgian opposition leaders are preparing a Charter of Solidarity on a common platform of fight against Saakashvili's regime that will be signed by oppositionists.

In his words, the sense of the Charter lays in co-ordinated activity of supporters of democratic change of power and of those who supports the «outdoor action» format. «The opposition must be united», said Levan Gachechiladze.

It is the chronic disability to agree that alerts the society most of all about the opponents of the existing regime. At the presidential election of last year the opponents did not manage to nominate a common candidate. There were as many as 13 aspirants. Moreover, the opposition basically lost the last round of confrontation with the authorities as everyone pursued their own targets.

It was not without reason that at the end of last week during his interview to the Tbilisi newspaper «Kvela Siakhle» the ex president of Georgia Edward Shevardnadze said: «The main reason of the fact that as a result of its months-long activities the opposition did not manage to achieve early retirement of Saakashvili is lack of experience and of consolidation while organizing and conducting such activities».

In his words, the opposition leaders «shared just one point: their desire to discharge Saakashvili». «But leaders do not retire so easily. To make them retire, one must make them feel the force and unanimity of the opposition. But this does not exist yet», believes Shevardnadze. He also noted that «the current leaders were stronger than the opposition in terms of experience and resources». «If everything goes on as today, Saakashvili will be able to hold his position until the period of his authorities expires, which means till 2013», said the Grey-Haired Fox (so they call Shevardnadze).
