Time of Avlabar Tales Has Passed2009-11-25 22:52
The Western public opinion is currently busy with the issues of crisis management, Iranian nuclear potential, Afghan war in which Washington and his NATO allies, as well as partners by some other blocks, got boggled down hopelessly. In this heap of problems Georgia has much less space than the Tbilisi leader Mikhail Saakashvili would prefer to.
His attempt to assign primary importance to the Georgian issue at the coming January session of the PACE went off like a damp squib, and the sending of a company of Georgian soldiers to Afghanistan did not lead to the large-scale appreciation of the Georgian contribution to the cause of worldwide democratic values protection that the Georgian president had counted on so much.
American diplomats are occupying an extremely prudent position in the area of the interpretation of American and Georgian partnership, especially in such fields as the military one.
Thus, in his interview to the «Russian Newspaper» the American ambassador in Russia John Byerly stressed: «We are not supplying Georgia with weapons and are not planning to do it. I think there is some misunderstanding here. We are really training Georgian soldiers for the participation in military actions against Afghan extremists. This is a specific mission. Georgian military men will make their contribution in Afghanistan, as the military representatives of some other countries, e.g. Canada, Britain or France. But no talks on America supplying Georgia with weapons square with reality. We are not doing it and are not planning to».
As it can be seen from this interview, the American diplomat did not hold forth about the role of the Georgian company in the historical mission of the West in Afghanistan. Saakashvili sent his soldiers as another portion of "cannon fodder" in the ranks of the international coalition, America is thankful to him. But Washington is not planning any weapon suppliers, at least on the state level.
Though the American ambassador in Moscow did not answer to the question what the USA mean under the concept of «defense» when they say that America is doing its best for Georgia to be able to defend itself. He just noted that Washington understands how sensible this subject is and stressed that the USA is working «in most close contact» with its Russian and European partners in order to guarantee a more quiet situation in the region.
