Tbilisi is armed and very dangerous again2009-12-08 09:31
The Georgian Ministry of Defense admitted that it has resumed its military power. This statement was followed by Mikhail Saakashvili's speech about the Georgian army having a chance to get experience under fire in Afghanistan. After these songs of praise in honor of the Georgian army, the Georgian MFA came down on Russia again, having reminded about the cheating with Medvedev-Sarkozy plan and the enhancement of the naval frontier service near the coast of Abkhazia. Well, who should be afraid of whom?
Today, three brand new Russian cutters in the context of Sobol and Mangust projects were to moor in the port of Ochamchira located on the Black Sea coast of Abkhazia.
The ceremony of meeting of the crews was cancelled by the Russian authorities. The reasons were left unnamed. However, a source of RIA Novosti in the Abkhazian President's administration reported that it was attributed to the day of mourning in remembrance of those who died in the night club in Perm.
Meanwhile, the Georgian parliament and MFA spoke against the enhancement of the Russia naval frontier service in Abkhazia: Tbilisi estimated it as violation of Georgia's "territorial integrity".
According to the deputies, common statements and resolutions which have been accepted by international organizations in respect of Russia's actions turned out to be ineffective. That is why parliamentarians are demanding the introduction of "punitive sanctions".
"Russia is increasing its military potential, violating the generally recognized norms of international law and its own international obligations", - MFA of Georgia asserts, reminding Russia that the international law does not recognize such notion as "territorial waters of Abkhazia" and "maritime space of Abkhazia".
Let us remind you that last August Russia defended South Ossetia from the Georgian aggression and after that recognized this republic and Abkhazia as independent states. Bilateral agreements on joint border protection were signed with these republics.
As soon as the Georgian cutters detained Turkish tanker Buket that was sailing towards Abkhazia, Russia promised to enhance protection of the Abkhazian waters. Russia sent out patrol ship Novorossijsk to the coast of the republic and decided to send out three more cutters that were to moor in Ochamchira.
As was stated at the end of last week by Deputy Head of Border Administration of FSS of Russia in Abkhazia Oleg Frolov, "the arrival of the Russian border cutters is aimed at ensuring the safety of ships heading towards the Abkhaz ports, as well as at providing protection of maritime boundaries of the republic".
