Saakashvili’s nursery rhymes on heroism among mercenaries2009-12-09 15:20
President Mikheil Saakashvili has decided to raise the prestige of the US-modernized Georgian army after its defeat in August 2008. His latest statements reveal that Georgians are, have been and will always be the best aid to US soldiers in the Middle East. Is that really so?
Being praised by General Roger Brad, US Air Forces Commander in Europe yesterday Sakartvelo leader Mishiko Saakashvili nodded in agreement and smiled. Sure, he said, Georgian soldiers in Afghanistan were appreciated many centuries ago, and they were simply flawless in Iraq!
Yesterday in his talk with Brad Saakashvili was artificially surprised - why? Is Georgia submitting one of the largest military contingents to Afghanistan? As the president confessed he finally realized that no other country on ISAF arrangement is ready to plunge the cream of its nation into the thick of the war.
Tbilisi is ready to send over 900 militaries there. The government must pay for immense support the US and Europe are providing.
The president told General Brad that Georgian militaries have "great experience of Afghan warfare".
"Georgians are familiar with this country well and have understanding of its people. Some centuries ago our warriors earned respect of the Afghans, there are villages where Georgian descendants live", - Saakashvili remarked.
What is he talking about? Maybe it's crusades when Western Christians tried to convert the Muslim East into their faith with ferro et igni? It's true the Muslim world has good memory of that - but it will do no good to the Georgians.
It is all the more strange what great experience in Afghanistan is meant when two days ago Saakashvili insisted that Georgian militaries need to take part in the war in Afghanistan to practise battlecraft. As the president frankly admitted he doesn't need an army for parades. Apparently he needs warriors to get Abkhazia and South Ossetia back.
Kind Brad didn't condemn his interlocutor in public supporting his version. (What else could he have said to the most generous supplier of "cannon fodder"?)
"Georgians are good warriors as the operation in Iraq confirmed where 2,000 Georgians were serving with courage and full heart. They displayed knowledge of local customs and enjoyed justified respect of the locals", - he remarked.
According to Brad the Georgian soldiers are "high-level professionals". He thanked the Georgian side for the contribution Georgia is making to peace building in Afghanistan.
